The resting potential is generated by the processes at the cell membrane, primarily through the action of ion channels and the Na+/K+ pump. At rest, the membrane is more permeable to K+ ions than to Na+ ions, allowing K+ to move out of the cell down its concentration gradient. This creates a negative charge inside the cell. The Na+/K+ pump then actively transports 3 Na+ ions out of the cell and 2 K+ ions into the cell, contributing to the overall negative charge inside the cell. These processes result in the establishment of the resting potential, with the inside of the cell being negatively charged compared to the outside. **
